NUTRITION

One of the major objectives of the Foundation is addressing malnutrition. The Foundation was a step ahead of the recently published malnutrition report by the South African Human Rights Commission which found that in the case of the Eastern Cape, “the right of the child to basic nutrition has been violated”, especially where severe acute malnutrition is concerned. The SAHRC discovered that more than 100 children die of malnutrition in less than a year in the Eastern Cape. This is an appalling situation.

In one of its many outreach programmes, supported fully by businesses and individuals, the GNF has set up, what it calls The East London Chapter starting in the community of Amalinda, Stoney Drift Soup Kitchen and has attracted sponsorship through VN Automotive of a monthly contribution of R35K and joined by the Beverages Company that has ever since joined by providing beverages to the support of the soup kitchen. Through this programme we provide two meals a day three times a week to 58 children. The meals are carefully considered to add nutritional value to the young minds, bodies for their needs of growing up healthy. The Foundation further provides meals for the entire community of 300 people from 136 households every Saturday. GNF is also helping that community establish what it calls a love garden to bring a much-needed nutrition, life and a sense of peace. This is a big milestone and one of our proud interventions.

It is the wish of the Foundation to help the community establish self-sustaining initiatives such as these, and is busy setting up a committee that’ll be responsible for the self supporting feeding scheme that’ll eventually provide daily meals for the children of that community. Community gardens are also our ultimate ideal where people will go back to the ways of batter, exchanging produce and harvest instead of buying from the shops.

The Foundation with its business partners built a creche in Ndingo, handed it over to the community on [25 December 2022]. The GNF committed to providing meals for the children at least twice a day in this creche. This means that in this small village at least 10-15 children less than 6 years old are provided with nutritious food daily.

The GNF was involved in other immediate relief interventions, such as responding to the Queenstown flood victims with food packs, sanitary towels and blankets; providing and distributing food packs for the elderly, the poor households and those identified by the communities as families in dire need
